What evolutionary purpose does that tusk serve?

I suggest you check out this link to determine that: http://twentytwowords.com/2011/09/17/the-avenging-narwhal-play-set-lets-children-plunge-tusks-into-cute-animals/

This seems far less primitive than I would have imagined. Maybe nature has evolved this tusk beyond mere savage weaponry as in the simpler cases of the rhino, buck, or other species with shorter horns. A longer horn can be both a weapon and a roasting tool for holding things over fire at a comfortable distance.
